Making Danish Laws Easy to Understand with AI
My experience building Regelrytter.dk - an AI-powered website that explains Danish laws in plain language

Making Complex Laws Simple: An Example
Let's look at how we handle complex laws. Take the Children's Act (Børns lov) for example - it's full of important rights but written in dense legal language.
For Børns lov, the real details are often found in dense "delvejledninger" and principal decisions from Ankestyrrelsen, which provide crucial context for understanding how the law is applied in practice.
I built the site to take these complex paragraphs and explain them in a way that makes sense to everyone. The AI helps create clear explanations, but I make sure everything stays accurate and helpful.

Why I Built Regelrytter
I've always found it frustrating how hard it is to understand legal texts. The name "Regelrytter" - which literally means "rule rider" or "regulation stickler" in Danish - came from my desire to make these complex rules accessible to everyone. I wanted to create something that would help people understand their rights and obligations without needing a law degree.
What surprised me most was how quickly the site gained traction. Within a week of launching, we were showing up on Google's front page for specific legal paragraphs. I hadn't expected this - it was just a happy accident from focusing on making the content genuinely helpful.
The site has data scraped from retsinformation.dk and ankestyrrelsen, with only a selection of laws being AI-enriched due to the AI commentary cost of approximately $150 per law.
Here's what makes Regelrytter special:
- It explains laws in everyday language
- Focuses on laws that affect daily life (like children's rights and traffic rules)
- Uses AI to make explanations clear and accurate
- No tracking cookies - just straight to the point

What's Next for Regelrytter
I haven't had anyone tell me they used the site yet, so let me share my assessment of AI capabilities and my excitement for this technology to help ordinary people and public employees.
Building Regelrytter has been an amazing learning experience. I've discovered that there's a real need for making laws more accessible, and AI can help bridge that gap. The potential for AI to democratize access to legal information is enormous - imagine ordinary citizens being able to understand their rights without hiring expensive lawyers, or public employees having instant access to clear guidance on complex regulations.
Looking ahead, I'd love to:
What excites me most is the possibility of AI making legal knowledge accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford legal counsel. This could fundamentally change how citizens interact with their government and understand their rights.
- Add more laws and regulations
- Improve the explanations based on user feedback
- Maybe help other countries do something similar
- Keep making it easier for people to understand their rights
